Biography

Dr. Carey received his B.S. from Saint Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. He earned his Ph.D. in Biochemical Pharmacology from State University of New York at Buffalo. After active duty for training in the Army Medical Service Corps, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship focusing on melanoma immunology and serology at Sloan-Kettering Institute with Lloyd Old. He joined the University of Michigan Medical School faculty focusing on developing research in head and neck cancer and rose through the ranks to Professor of Otolaryngology and Pharmacology. He is on the training faculty of the Cancer Biology Program, the Cell and Molecular Biology program, the Graduate Program in Pharmacology, The Translational Pathology Research program and the Advanced Training in Otolaryngology Research Program.

 

Research Interests

His current research interests are defining and understanding oral HPV infection and persistence as well as the molecular mechanisms of treatment resistance in head and neck cancer, particularly in HPV positive tumors and the effects of the cellular site of integration and alternate transcript expression on tumor behavior. Dr. Carey also studied mechanisms of autoimmune hearing loss, the development of new diagnostic assays for autoimmune hearing loss and understanding the role of the solute carrier protein SLC44A2 in the inner ear and its role in autoimmune disease and more recently its role in thrombosis and embolic disease.
